Prelude to the trip:
Why would anyone want to drive over 2200 miles on back roads half way across the country?
Why Route 66?
Why risk 38 plus years of marriage to a series paper maps trip tix’s from AAA, a highlighter, and a wife who says, “yes I want to see the biggest rocking chair in Lebanon, MO?
The story goes something like this, two kids from Pittsburgh, (Plum) meet in high school, finish college, get married, have two great kids, are fortunate in their careers, and now have retired and want to see this great country!
A few years back I got on a kick to read some of the books my parents wished I had growing up. One of those books was The Grapes of Wrath, the Steinbeck novel of the down on their luck family of “Oakies” escaping the dust bowl by going to California, along Route 66. I loved that book, and wondered what it would be like to travel those same roads, but for obvious different reasons. Kim being the trooper she always is with my wild ideas said, “let’s get our Kicks on Route 66”. So download the song, and sing along, “It winds from Chicago to LA….”
We started our Route 66 journey, where the road begins…Chicago!
We flew into Chicago on Tuesday late afternoon, in time to drive into the city and go to the Willis Tower. Up at 103 stories they have these plexiglass pods that allow you to “step out into the clouds for a bird’s eye view of the Chicago skyline. We had a spectacular night time view, as the pictures indicate. However the big event was getting Kim to step out onto a glass floor, 103 stories up!! She discovered that if she backed on to the platform and didn’t look down, she could do it…and she did! We have the photo to prove it!
We finished the evening off with a Lou Malnati Chicago style deep dish pizza, this trip is starting off just right.
